Tools for design C — Bath 18
A first tool plan for the 216 × 96 in steel-frame trailer. The totals are before sales tax, delivery, gas refills, steel, or trailer parts.
Prices and totals live in build/prices.js; they were checked 2026-10-12 against the rent-or-buy research.
The main rails and tongue are 2 × 4 × 3/16 in tube. Practice on the same tube until an experienced welder approves destructive test coupons and the first structural welds. A 120 V machine can reach this thickness, but it is at its published limit. A 240 V machine gives more margin. Do not weld near fuel, batteries, propane, foam, wood dust, or the finished trailer.
Terms
- MIG
- Metal inert gas welding feeds a solid wire through a gun while shielding gas protects the molten steel.
- Flux-core
- Flux-cored wire makes its own shielding smoke. It works outdoors better, but makes more cleanup. It does not need a gas bottle.
- Gas (C25)
- C25 is three parts argon to one part carbon dioxide. It is the common shielding gas for mild-steel MIG welding. gas example
- Duty cycle
- The part of a ten-minute period that a welder may weld at a stated output before it must cool. Read the exact machine manual.
- Amperage
- Amps are welding current. More available amps generally let a machine weld thicker steel in one pass.
- 120 V vs 240 V circuit
- A 120 V welder plugs into a normal outlet. A 240 V welder needs a dryer-type outlet. Nathan’s garage circuit therefore matters only if he chooses the 240 V machine; verify the receptacle and breaker with an electrician, not a guess.
- Angle grinder
- A hand-held spinning-disc tool for cutting, cleaning weld areas, and smoothing sharp steel.
- Chop saw / cold saw
- An abrasive chop saw throws sparks and uses a grinding wheel. A metal-cutting circular saw uses a toothed blade. A cold saw is the cleanest, coolest and most expensive choice.
- Step bit
- A cone-shaped drill bit that makes several hole diameters in thin metal.
- Rivet
- A blind rivet is a one-side mechanical fastener. A rivet gun pulls its stem to clamp sheet and trim.
- VHB
- Very high bond tape. Joe used it to bond aluminum skin; prep and placement must be right before it touches. Joe’s Part 2
- PEX crimp
- A crimp or cinch tool squeezes a ring around cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) water pipe. Check each joint with its go/no-go gauge.
Welding
| Need | What to get and why | Buy / borrow / rent |
|---|---|---|
| Welder | 120 V option: Hobart Handler 140EZ is rated by Hobart through 3/16 in mild steel with flux-core. That is the frame-tube thickness, so it has no one-pass margin. 240 V option: Lincoln POWER MIG 180C is 230 V and Lincoln rates MIG through 3/16 in in one pass; its flux-core rating goes thicker. Hobart maker spec · Lincoln maker spec | Buy. Claude’s starting pick: 240 V if the garage already has the correct circuit; otherwise use 120 V and arrange experienced help. |
| Wire and gas | Buy .030 in ER70S-6 solid wire for MIG, plus C25 cylinder, regulator/flow gauge, and spare contact tips. Solid wire needs gas; flux-core is the wind-tolerant backup. regulator example | Buy wire and tips. Lease/refill the cylinder locally. |
| Personal protection | Auto-darkening helmet, leather gloves, welding jacket, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirator for grinding, and ABC fire extinguisher. The helmet lets both hands stay on the work. helmet, gloves and hammer listings | Buy. Do not borrow a damaged helmet or gloves. |
| Hold and measure | Welding magnets, locking clamps, C-clamps, 24 in framing square, tape, levels, chipping hammer, wire brush, and a welding cart. The cart is optional. Joe levelled the frame on stands and used it as his assembly table. Joe’s frame notes | Buy small tools. Borrow clamps if possible. Skip a table at first. |
Cheap table: set the bare frame level, square and supported on four jack stands. Protect the floor from sparks. Tack and check diagonals before final welds. It is not a substitute for sound stands or for a qualified structural-weld review.
Cutting and grinding
| Tool | Plain use | Choice |
|---|---|---|
| 4½ in angle grinder | Cut steel with thin cutoff wheels. Prepare weld edges and smooth with flap discs. Keep separate discs for cutting and grinding. | Buy. |
| Steel cutting saw | Budget: 14 in abrasive chop saw. It is fast and spark-heavy. Better: Evolution-class metal-cutting circular saw gives cleaner, cooler cuts. Best shop tool: a cold saw is cleanest, but expensive. | Buy abrasive saw; borrow or rent a cold saw only if a shop has one. |
| Jigsaw and snips | Jigsaw with metal blades cuts curved aluminum and small openings. Aviation snips trim thin aluminum skin. | Buy. |
| Drilling and cleanup | Step-bit set for thin sheet, cobalt-bit set for steel, deburring tool, and cutting oil. A drill press is useful for repeated square holes but optional. | Buy bits and deburrer. Borrow or rent a drill press. |
Woodwork and skin
| Tool | Use on this trailer | Buy / borrow / rent |
|---|---|---|
| Cordless drill/driver and bits | Drill pilot holes and drive wood screws without a cord across the work. | Buy. |
| Circular saw with guide | Break down ¾ in floor plywood and panels. A straight board clamped as a guide is enough. | Buy or borrow. |
| Table saw | Rip repeated wood strips. Joe used one for interior and insulation work. Joe’s Part 3 | Borrow or rent. Do not buy one just for this build unless it will be used later. |
| Router | Trim panels and make clean openings after the frames are installed. Joe used one for openings. Joe’s Part 2 | Borrow or rent. |
| Rivet gun, caulk gun, knives | Use a hand riveter for a few rivets; a drill-powered riveter saves hands on many. Caulk gun applies sealant. Utility knives cut foam and tape. | Buy hand gun and caulk gun; borrow or rent a drill riveter if many rivets. |
| Layout and support | Long straightedge, chalk line, 4 ft level, torpedo level, 25 ft tape, squares, many clamps, sawhorses, and a 10 ft work table. | Buy measuring tools. Borrow table and sawhorses when possible. |
Plumbing and electrical
| Tool | Use | Buy / borrow / rent |
|---|---|---|
| PEX crimp or cinch tool, cutter and gauge | Make and verify PEX water joints. Keep the matching go/no-go gauge with the tool. PEX tool listing | Buy or borrow one complete matched system. |
| Wrenches and propane tools | Pipe wrench and adjustable wrenches hold plumbing fittings. Use tube cutter and flare tool only if the propane design uses copper line. Use gas-rated thread sealant only where the fitting maker allows it. | Buy wrenches. Borrow flare tool if needed. |
| Electrical test and terminals | Wire strippers, ratchet terminal crimper, heat gun, multimeter, and test light make and test 12 V terminals. A 12 V bench supply is optional for testing lights before installation. | Buy basic hand tools and multimeter. Borrow bench supply. |
| Leak test | Use approved leak-test solution after propane work. Never use flame. materials-page safety note | Buy solution with propane materials. |
Lifting and safety
| Item | Minimum for this job | Buy / borrow / rent |
|---|---|---|
| Floor jack and stands | One 3-ton floor jack and four jack stands, each rated 3 tons or more. The jack lifts; the stands hold. Never work beneath a trailer supported only by a jack. | Buy or borrow from a known-good source. |
| Wheel chocks | Chock the wheel or wheels before lifting or welding on the frame. | Buy. |
| Safety kit | Safety glasses, hearing protection, grinding or spray respirator, first-aid kit, ABC extinguisher, and work gloves. Welding gloves are separate. | Buy. |
